“moving forward slowly”

I gave an uncomfortable laugh when I saw these words at the entrance to an art museum in Moravia a few years ago. The laugh was uncomfortable because it expressed my own feelings about my work. Things are moving forward slowly . . . but at least moving forward, right? One step at a time, however small, is progress. (sigh).

We entered the museum and enjoyed some fascinating sculptures and painting by an artist I didn’t know – Zbynek Sekal. We learned that the artist repeatedly wrote this phrase in his journal: “things are moving forward slowly.” It’s a reminder that slow is good.

Sekal believed that moving forward slowly was essential to the creative process. I agree. We are formed, and we participate in the formation of what is around us, slowly.

Slow is good. And things are moving forward. Rejoice, and keep going.
